Regional Transmission Expansion Planning
WECC began Interconnection-wide transmission expansion planning in 2005 under the guidance of the Transmission Expansion Planning Policy Committee (TEPPC). Since that time, WECC has met the changing needs of WECC members and stakeholders by increasing the breadth of its planning processes, expanding its planning products, and evolving its governance structure.
In 2009, WECC responded to the U.S. Congress' call for the creation of Interconnection-wide transmission plans. With funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), WECC has increased its technical capability and stakeholder participation. WECC now creates biennial 10-year plans and a 20-year Interconnection-wide transmission plans that are guided by stakeholder-created scenarios and informed by environmental analysis. These inform all stakeholders on potential impacts to reliability and assist in meeting policy mandates.
The DOE funding was made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.
